About Project 365

I have decided to get back into my photography. I have boycotted my hobby for awhile because I miss the meditating atmosphere of a dark room. (Maybe I just miss the fumes!?!?) When I went to school I can remember spending very long evenings in the dark room and having a sense of accomplishment and creativity! Since I have made the switch to digital photography, I rarely edit the photos I take. With this project I will have different types of photos. All photos will be taken with my iPhone and will not be edited. Some will be normal everyday pics and some artistic in nature, but all will be a little part of my day. Everyday for a year! Here's to going out and finding the creativity again...

Today during professional development, we were assigned to different classrooms in our 2 high schools. One thing I don't like about secondary schools is the lack of "fun" when you enter the classroom. The white walls are mind numbing!!!

However, today I walked into a reading classroom in the high school and I felt like I was walking into a 5th grade classroom! There were posters on the walls of reading strategies and reading workshop rules. There were books everywhere, organized in colorful bins and a big planet with vines in and out of the book bins! You walked into the room and you just knew this was a teacher that LOVES her job! More importantly, she LOVES her students! The room was so inviting!

Every wall was covered with home made posters and the white institutional feeling was not even remotely present. To top it all off... there were posters on the ceiling! What a great, different way to grab the students' attentions!

I wanted to be in this classroom!

There was one rule in particular that I thought really summed it up...

READ WELL. READ A LOT. READ WHAT YOU LOVE.

Philadelphia Phillies (2pts) - need to get their act together. The talent that we started the season with has failed!

Philadelphia Eagles - Definitely expecting a losing season... but hey at least I might have a better chance to get tickets!

Pittsburgh Penguins (2pts) - A new team I will be following... Hopefully the western part of the state will bring some pride back to Pennsylvania. Clearly the eastern side is having issues.

Pittsburgh Steelers - A team I will never follow!

Photography - Reconnecting with my lost love... going to see about a big girl camera very soon! :0)

Painting - Was in and out of shops in Downtown Lancaster yesterday and kept noticing the paintings for sale by local artists. Maybe I will get back into painting as well.

Principal - Hmmmmm, do I really want this still? Is it possible to be the principal I want to be amongst all the crap that goes along with the job?

Persistence - I need to keep going in my wellness/fitness goals. It is soooo easy to get off track! Most people say they lose weight in the summer and gain in the winter. I'm the opposite... in the summer I'm not on a schedule and I do as I please, eat as I please, and think I have all the time in the world to workout. In the winter, I have a tight schedule, I plan my meals, I plan time to workout, and I stick to the schedule.

People watching - Yesterday was a wonderful day in Lancaster City. There were people everywhere! It is so interesting to watch and observe people. I could sit for hours and do just that!

Projects - I have soooooooo many projects I want to accomplish at home and at school!

Posting - Took a look back at my almost 60 blog posts and realize I may have begun my own kind of therapy...

I decided to google retail therapy and didn't really like what I read. Apparently I have some deep seeded problem that I am dealing with via shopping.

That may be true however nothing feels as good as buying over $100 worth of clothing and only paying about $53 due to sales and coupons!!! And no, I don't regret the purchases and no, the high does not go away! i relish in every purchase I make and admire my purchases for days, months, even years to come...

Hot air balloon rides
The infamous raffle

Long tables of food

Here we go:
Lawn needs mowed
Weeds need pulled
Need to weed whack around the edges of yard, walkway, driveway, etc.
Deck really needs stained/weather treatment
Little corner of my shed needs to be reattached
The waffle fence on my deck needs reattached
Downstairs toilet needs fixed
Need to fix or purchase a dishwasher
Low levels of radon in basement, I really should get that taken care of
I need a larger humidifier in the basement
I'm afraid to open the front closet...

Honestly, that's the short list. I published the list so maybe I will hold myself accountable for completing everything. Not so sure it's gonna happen...Maybe I should enlist in some help, OH DADDY... :0)

I've been spending a lot of time with a particular 6-year-old, who constantly amazes me by her academic skills. Her number sense is unheard of. Her higher level thinking skills are off the charts. She can inference and draw conclusions better than most 6-year-olds I know.

What makes me sad is that her number sense and critical thinking skills are better than the seven 5th graders I taught in summer school. She reads with expression and her ability to pull information from text is better than some 5th graders in my school.

Her background*: Her mother and father are both educated, highly intelligent and musically creative people. She has learned to love learning from them. They open her up to several different experiences giving her vast background knowledge that helps with her logical and higher level thinking skills. They are involved in her school and support her studies at home in any way they can.

*Please note, nothing in her background says anything about having "highly qualified" teachers or high test scores on a DIBELS test because... IT ALL STARTS AT HOME!

Nothing frustrates me more than having some of the best teachers I've ever worked with feel like they aren't doing their jobs well enough because of the latest test scores. There is only so much a school can do and believe me, the teachers at my school go WELL beyond the call of duty! We don't have control over what happens at home. We have the kids for 7 hrs a day and do the best we can.

Yet...

Teachers and administrators in low performing school districts get negative media coverage and are accused of not doing their jobs... what about the parents?

IT ALL STARTS AT HOME!

Schools lose funding over poor test scores... what do the parents lose if their child scores poorly?

IT ALL STARTS AT HOME!

Schools lose funding over attendance rates... whose responsibility is it to get a 6-year-old to school?

IT ALL STARTS AT HOME!

How is it that ALL children are expected to learn at the same rate and become proficient when your dealing with extremely different backgrounds?

Student A: my 6-year-old buddy has had every opportunity available to her from birth, surrounded by books and learning and positive role models.

Student B: a 6-year-old that has never had a story read to them and is learning the alphabet and what numbers are for the first time in kindergarten.

I don't claim to have the knowledge that will someday ultimately fix this situation but what I do know is that the government's idea of No Child Left Behind in theory is commendable but in reality unfairly punishes teachers and students in Student B's world.

Since doing this project, today was the hardest day for me to choose just one picture to post. I guess it just goes to show where my true passion and inspiration lie... with the kids!

As I was working in my office today I heard kids practicing their violins. I decided to take a break and snap a few shots. The music filled the cafeteria and surrounding hallways.

I looked at the group of kids playing and thought to myself, wow, what a great group of kids. Many of them do not come from the greatest homes with the most appropriate role models but they still make it a point to do well in school and their music. What makes them different from other kids? Probably many things but I am willing to bet that music plays a huge role!

“Music has a great power for bringing people together. With so many forces in this world acting to drive wedges between people, it’s important to preserve those things that help us experience our common humanity.” – Ted Turner, Turner Broadcasting System

“Music is one way for young people to connect with themselves, but it is also a bridge for connecting with others. Through music, we can introduce children to the richness and diversity of the human family and to the myriad rhythms of life.” – Daniel A. Carp, Eastman Kodak Company Chairman and CEOAn

An education rich in the arts and humanities develops skills that are increasingly crucial to the productivity and competitiveness of the nation’s workforce: the ability to think creatively, communicate effectively and work collaboratively, and to deal with ambiguity and complexity. Just as important, exposure to the arts and humanities fosters cultural literacy: the ability to understand and appreciate other cultures, perspectives and traditions; to read and understand music and literature; to craft a letter or essay; to design a Web site; and to discern the “hidden persuaders” in a political or commercial advertisement. Arts and humanities education also develops skills necessary to participate in one of the fastest-growing, economically significant set of occupations and industries in the American economy – the arts, cultural and intellectual property section. The “creative workforce” – which includes traditional artist categories (dancers, musicians, painters, actors, photographers, authors), as well as individuals employed in advertising, architecture, fashion design, film, video, music, publishing and software development – is growing at a rate more than double that for the rest of the nation’s workforces. -- Summary of paper by Prof. Ann M. I decided to baby it along and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

That's when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn't let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the capability of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower, we can attain the same nourishment and nurturing as well.

First, we need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the capabilities in achieving our desires. Like the Sunflower, it knew it had the capability to overcome its obstacle because it had faith it would succeed.

Stand tall like the Sunflower and be proud of who and what you are and the environment will begin to support you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

As calm and serene as this looks, our night is shaping up to be anything but! Checked into our hotel and come to find a Star Trek Convention! I have mixed feelings about this book. I do think it is funny to a point. Is the author assuming that kids don't know what a book is? That is mind boggling! Even in today's world, children read books! It is not a lost art! However it does bring up a hot topic in today's educational issues...

Is there a difference if a child is reading a book vs. a magazine vs. a blog vs. an ebook vs. a wikispace vs. a website, etc?

Personally I don't care what a kid reads for pleasure as LONG AS THEY ARE READING SOMETHING THEY ENJOY!

One of the characteristics of humankind seems to be a desire to have more. Many experience the feeling, or have the belief or attitude of never having enough. We sometimes seem to view this as a "negative" experience, as in the case of not having enough money, love, clothes, or a myriad of other "possessions". We never seem to be satisfied, to always need more to enable us to reach that elusive point of total satisfaction.

This drive of always wanting more does have its positive side—it is what leads us ever onward. 'Not having enough' can be the motivation to keep on going, to grow to our full potential, to have more happiness, more well-being, more fulfillment, and attain self-realization.

There also is a catch to be aware of. If this desire for "more" becomes a need, or an obsession, then it can be a hindrance rather that a helper. If we are attached to our desire for more, whether it be for material goodies or spiritual ones, we may lose sight of our true goal in the process. A good analogy for this is being so concerned with not having any fruit on the kitchen table, that we neglect to look out the window to see the tree loaded with fruit ready and waiting to be picked. Sometimes, we can be so caught up in seeing what we don't have, that we don't see what we do have.

Tonight, while shopping, I again notice these gigantic "Extra Giant" marshmallows that Giant is now selling. If someone can please tell me the need for such a HUGE sugary treat, I would be much appreciated. Do we tend to take things too far? Throw things out of perspective just because of wanting more?

Came across this in a forward email... found it very interesting and VERY true...

The Paradox of Our Time in History is that
we spend more, but have less;
we buy more, but enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families;
more conveniences, but less time;
more medicine, but less wellness.
We read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
These are the times of tall men, and short character;
steep profits, and shallow relationships.
These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce;
of fancier houses, but broken homes.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life;
we've added years to life, not life to years;
we've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

Day 38

One man's trash is another man's treasure... I was hoping that was true today.

As I rose this morning at 5:45am (on a Saturday) I wondered why in the world I'd agreed to this garage sale. Then I remembered how good it felt to be able to walk around my 3rd floor and how good it felt to take out 12 boxes from the 3rd floor! My cleaning therapy may just be the ticket! It is a cleansing of sort.

As I sat out waiting for people to pull up and realize they couldn't live without my old used stuff, i went over the memories many of the items had. My first set of dishes I bought on my own for my first apartment. A jacket that an old friend bought me after a fun filled day in Lancaster. TONS of teaching supplies that I have gathered over the years and so on.

Something I also enjoyed were the random conversations with people that stopped by. A teaching assistant of a Pre-K class from Brooklyn. A woman and her autistic son. A high school science teacher. A lady who just kept yelling/nagging at her husband. A teaching assistant that struggled to go back to school for her teaching degree and who is taking her first job this fall as a certified teacher. A couple that just moved her from Idaho, etc. Different backgrounds. Different stories. Different situations from different walks of life.

As much as I wanted other people to take my trash and turn it into their treasure, just the opposite happened. As they were telling their tales of hardships, I treasured each story and remembered to give thanks for all the blessings I had in my life. (Even if at the moment I wasn't feeling particularly lucky) Bottom line I feel the majority of people are kind hearted, hard working, and just want to get along with others and be the best they can be.

They also bought LOTS of my stuff.

Things are looking up.

How many times do I need to say this until I REALLY believe it! It is so much easier saying it to someone else than to myself!!!

Things happened today that were so crazy I couldn't have made them up! First my car is still in the shop! Their goal is to have it done today but they can't promise!

Then, as I am trying to get ready for a garage sale at my dad's and trying to load up the car to take things over... CAN'T FIND THE KEYS! We looked everywhere! We tore apart the house, unloaded the car and every box! NO KEYS! In the meantime as we were looking for the keys, the door to the 3rd floor LOCKED!?!?!? I have no idea how that happened but we had to take the door off the hinges to open it. Now, back to the keys... After 4 hours of looking, I called my dad. He came over, we called the car place to have them make a new key which isn't cheap and while we were on the phone, I FOUND THE KEYS! AHHHHHHHHH SO FRUSTRATING!

Then I go over to my dad's house to unload all the stuff for the garage sale and his girlfriend said we had better go hang signs on the street signs. We were out doing that and the Cutco scissors fell point down on my toe and drew blood! It was bleeding so much we thought I'd need stitches! At that point I just had had enough and broke down!

I got myself together, had a popsicle, and went home.

I found myself sitting on my deck just thinking, trying to escape the self-pity that was coming toward me like a speeding bullet... It was unusually quiet and the minutes slipped away like seconds.

As I sat and watched the sun set I searched on my computer for a quote I saved awhile back.

Welcome to my 3rd floor... This could be another bedroom, a cute studio, an office, etc. However, it has become storage! LOTS of storage! How does one person have this much stuff? I'm a self proclaimed pack rat!

I have pictures and love notes from 7th grade. I have gifts and cards from past students. I have shoes that haven't seen the light of day in years and are probably out of style! I found 2 VCR's, a box of about 40 Disney VHS tapes, and unopened Hallmark Christmas ornaments. Shall I go on? I found a Tupperware container of sand darts, old seashells I collected at some point in my life, about 4 complete bed sheet sets, a crap load of kitchen utensils, TONS of holiday decorations, school files, school files, school files, AND school files! YIKES!

My first instinct was to hire someone to come in and clean house! Someone who would yell at me and not let me keep anything! I honestly googled it and (although I already knew this) found the price range to be insanely high! Then I came across an article about how cleaning is the new therapy. It says...

"Cleaning is the new therapy. Psychologists have found that there is a marked difference in mood before and after doing cleaning, just as with a therapy session.
Research maintains that a clean house makes people feel happy, satisfied, comfortable and healthy. The According to Carol Nemeroff, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University, spring cleaning may have been in existence for ages. This psychological boost may be derived from a satisfied urge to clean out our nests."

So to save a few hundred dollars in clean-up costs and therapy... I'm rolling up my sleeves and cleaning house! Well, at least that's the plan...

"Rules are made to be broken," a phrase that as a teenager I think I seemed to live by. Why is it that as soon as we are told not to do something we get this burning sensation to go do it as soon as possible!?!?

When I was in the classroom I was a firm believer in creating classroom rules together and never starting with "No" or "Don't." One year I even went all out and had only one rule in my classroom of 6th graders... Don't do anything that causes a problem for someone else. Yes I broke my rule of not starting with "Don't" but I wanted to try it out. The nice thing was if we had made a list of rules and something came up that wasn't on the list, the kid kinda had a point, however with my rule of Don't do anything that causes a problem for someone else I could simply say, "You are distracting me and that is causing a problem because I can't do my job." Of course I wouldn't recommend this for all grades but my 6th graders could definitely handle it.

I laugh at this sign every time I take Juno for a walk. At first I would walk by this house very quickly, not giving Juno time to even think about squatting in their lawn. I also made sure my poop baggies were in plain sight in case Juno did not read the sign...

Then one day I see the owner of this sign walking her dog across the street from my house. The dog does it's business and she walks away. I couldn't believe it! They expect their lawn to be clean and not disturbed yet they don't live by their own rules and respect other people's property!?!? Maybe the next time I walk by their house the little phrase, "Rules are made to be broken," just might come to the front of my mind...

Even those who do cook are likely to be put off by recipes sufficient to feed four or six.

But eating alone can be a relaxing, almost meditative experience. In their new book, “Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life,” Lilian Cheung, a nutritionist at Harvard, and Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist teacher, give important advice to dieters about using Buddhist techniques of mindfulness to control overeating. When you eat alone, you have the opportunity to put these techniques into practice. Preparing a meal just for yourself can give you an opportunity to really contemplate what you eat.*

Tonight - 1 chicken breast, 1/4 c. couscous, 1 diced tomato, and 1 chopped green pepper mixed together. Just enough for me, with no leftovers. It was goooooood, hence the empty bowl!

Here are a few traditions I have experienced in my life, some of which I hope to some day pass on to my children.

Ocean City, NJ every September
Opening up 1 gift on Christmas Eve
Putting our shoes out in the hallway every Christmas Eve
Going to the Ephrata Fair
Going to the Lititz Memorial Day Parade
Going to the Lititz and Long's Park Fourth of July Celebrations
Funky Farm Cornroast
Selling our flowers and vegetables at our roadside stand
Riding bikes on the boardwalk
Sunday Dinners
Giving flowers to my teacher and bus driver on the first day of school
Christmas Eve service then to Rupt's Christmas Party for oyster stew
Planting our Christmas tree in the back yard*
Trips to Penn State
Finding an orange in our stocking
Poached eggs at Pappy's
Roots on Tuesdays
Checking the scarecrow's pockets
Standing in front of the Christmas tree with a sign with the year on it and getting our picture taken
and so on...

*(Picture) If you've ever been to my dad's house, the line of pine trees that line the back of the property are past christmas trees from when we were kids. :0)
