About Project 365

I have decided to get back into my photography. I have boycotted my hobby for awhile because I miss the meditating atmosphere of a dark room. (Maybe I just miss the fumes!?!?) When I went to school I can remember spending very long evenings in the dark room and having a sense of accomplishment and creativity! Since I have made the switch to digital photography, I rarely edit the photos I take. With this project I will have different types of photos. All photos will be taken with my iPhone and will not be edited. Some will be normal everyday pics and some artistic in nature, but all will be a little part of my day. Everyday for a year! Here's to going out and finding the creativity again...

Race Against Racism

This was my first race with Washington!

After a month of being sick and no gym... I finished the race by walking in under an hour. Man, I was hurtin'! But I finished!

What a gorgeous day! Fun was had by all!

Day 302

KATE-MIDDLETON by Manpan915
KATE-MIDDLETON a photo by Manpan915 on Flickr.
The Royal Wedding! Prince William and Kate Middleton are finally getting married! (They are now known as Dutch and Duchess of Cambridge)

I'm not one to usually go crazy over this kind of stuff however, when I woke up at 5:22 (sans alarm) I was compelled to turn on the tv, thinking I would fall back asleep... I was hooked! I couldn't stop watching!

I DVR'd the Today Show and TLC Coverage. (I needed a bit of news and a bit of gossip!)

I listened it to it on XM Radio as I drove to school.

When I got to school it was just in time for the kiss and I ran over to Nilsa's computer (keys, purse, and sunglasses landing all over the room as I threw everything everywhere!)

Since I've gotten home, I've been looking up pictures and news stories.

It is so neat to see all these places on the tv and being able to say, "I was there!" "I touched that!" "I sat there!"

Watching is bittersweet for many reasons but I one thing I can say... I get the intrigue of the Royal Family. The history that can be traced back is interesting to say the least!

However, tradition is nice too. Tradition that can be traced back 700+ years! Among the tradition is the modern spin the couple put on the wedding! The informal feel to the wedding, the words "to obey" being left out of the vows, and my most favorite... Kate being the first royal bride to have a college degree!

Every girl wishes for a fairytale wedding and most succeed... it's the fairytale life that takes the sweat the tears. One which I do look forward to working towards!

Tonight the Pens season came to an end. I am heartbroken. Never have I have been inspired by a sports team...

This was my first season as a Pens fan and no other season in my life, in any sport, caused me more pain and joy!

For a while there, everything was going along to plan. The Pittsburgh Penguins rattled off twelve straight wins in a stretch from mid-November to mid-December. They were being profiled on HBO's "24/7" documentary season and it was all smiles in the lockeroom. Through the first half of the season Sidney Crosby tallied 66 points in 41 games, on pace to have the best offensive season in the league since Mario Lemieux fifteen years ago.

At that point, a first round exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs would seem to be about the furthest possibility for this buzzsaw of a team. They were hitting on all cylinders and one of their best players, forward Jordan Staal, was inching closer to making his season debut.

Then, as soon as it started, the 2010-11 Penguins season was doomed. Crosby collided with Washington's David Steckel at the Winter Classic and took a jarring hit. Then four nights later Tampa's Victor Hedman smashed Crosby's head into the boards and it would be the last night Crosby would play for the season.

A month later, former playoff MVP Evgeni Malkin went into the corner on a routine looking play, but then took a tumble and Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers fell on his leg in an awkward position. Just like that, Malkin's ACL was torn, his MCL damaged and that would be curtains on his season.

The Pens wouldn't have a choice, they'd be forced to battle on. They traded for Alex Kovalev and James Neal in an attempt to add offensive punch. They worked doggedly to maintain their positioning, and through the regular season they held on to the fourth seed in the playoffs, narrowly missing out on the division title to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Then came the playoff matchup with Tampa Bay. That matchup would end up finishing off the Penguins. Roloson at age 41, pitched several gems in net. St. Louis led the charge offensively with a series high four goals and eight points. It would be too much for Pittsburgh to overcome. Though they battled valiantly, the skill they needed to generate goals just wasn't there to be found, it was already long knocked out of the lineup.

It's always disappointing to be eliminated from the playoffs, but neither the Pens nor their fans should be ashamed. They battled to the very end, and though they wouldn't come out on top there's no shame to be found. Marc-Andre Fleury gave them a chance, the defense tried to smother the attack and the Pens work-pail, lunch box forwards did all they could to wear Tampa down and try to put pucks past Roloson.

The disappointment will turn to the long off-season. The Penguins have nine forwards set to become unrestricted free agents. Several of them, like Maxime Talbot, Pascal Dupuis and Craig Adams were instrumental parts of the 2009 team that won the Stanley Cup. Others, like Mike Rupp, Eric Godard and Chris Conner have done much for the organization over the years. Former star Alexei Kovalev got one last chance to prove himself, but seems to have been robbed of his fastball by age and a bad knee that's slowed the once dynamic skater.

Turnover in hockey is a fact of life. Several players have put on the black and gold for the final time, between the salary cap, salary expectations and young players knocking on the door, it's simply a function the life cycle of an NHL team. To those players who won't be back, all the fans should give a stick tap for their blood, sweat and pain over all the years.

There's always next season, and with the core of the team all under contract, the future is bright for the Penguins. At this point, that seems like a long time away from this moment in time. Because when the book on 2010-11 season is closed, there's nothing to do but wonder what could have been for a team with heart and talent that was robbed by injuries for a chance to compete for the Stanley Cup.

(Taken from PensBurgh Blog)

I've never been more proud of a team!  Looking forward to next season!  GO PENS!!!

What a great day!

Even though it was Easter, it's not much different than every other Sunday!

Dinner at Dad's
Sports all day long on all 4 tv's
Friends and family dropping in and out
Interesting conversations (Phillies Graham Slam came up at least 3 different times!)

Never a dull moment at The Funky Farm!

I love Sundays!

Happy Easter! XOXO

The joyful news that He is risen does not change the contemporary world. Still before us lie work, discipline, sacrifice. But the fact of Easter gives us the spiritual power to do the work, accept the discipline, and make the sacrifice. ~Henry Knox Sherrill

This is Juno's new favorite toy. She has so many toys and I justify each one by the fact that I've never had an issue with chewing! She chewed one of my shoes because she was pissed at me for something... other than that, nothing!

She knows many of them by name! This one is "Ally." Her bunny is "Baby." She will get bone, ball, and tug all by name! She's so smart!

Every night before bed, she chooses the toy she wants to bring upstairs. Then I throw all her toys on her bed in the corner of the living room and every afternoon when I get home from work, they are all over the house!

I often wonder what she does all day...

Although my job status for next year is still in limbo, I have been receiving tremendous support from the amazing people at my school!

Slowly but surely students are finding out from either teachers or parents that I may not be back next year.

I want the kids to know I am going to try my very hardest to be at school next year. I've been telling them that if I'm not back it's not because I don't care about the kids at Washington, it's because other kids need my help too. Breaks my heart to say it...

I want to be in the city. It's where I belong. It's part of who I am. It's part of my childhood. When my grandfather was principal and acting superintendent, he would dress up as Santa and I would go into schools with him and greet the kids. When my father coached McCaskey wrestling, I grew up running the halls of the high school. I student taught and did all my field experiences in the city schools. I even started my teaching career at King Elementary. I left King because of staffing concerns and went to another district, always with the intention on coming back to the city one day. The opportunity arose to come back 6 years later as Dean at Washington and I took it! Who knew my happiness of being "home" would be short lived in only 2 years...

Today I received a card that I will cherish always no matter what my fate is...

This is one of my favorite nights of the year! Washington Elementary Night at Barnes and Noble!

Students and their families are bused to Barnes and Noble and the students play music in the cafe to start off the night and then Dr. Hewitt, Mr. Paynter, myself, and other adults will read books in the children's section.

Last year I was given "Walter the Farting Dog" book complete with a fart machine! Needless to say I got a little carried away. This year I read a book with a student and we did a little skit.

After story time the students were all allowed to pick a book paid for by the school. It is so exciting to see the kids get excited about books!

It's a nice night to interact with kids and their families outside of school.

Fun was had by all!

Together, hundreds of teachers from SDoL marched together to the Board Meeting to show support for education funding.

The district proposed to cut more than 60 positions, including mine, and outsourcing over 100 positions.

Several of the cuts are tied directly to the loss of nearly $8 million in state funding under Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed budget.

The district is losing nearly $1 million for after-school tutoring and $43,304 for its dual-enrollment program, both of which would be cut from SDoL's budget.

But the superintendent pointed out the district is committed to maintaining its full-day kindergarten and pre-K programs, despite a $2.3 million reduction in state grants that pay for those programs.

The other cuts include the proposed outsourcing of custodial services, which would affect about 88 jobs, and privatizing the operation of Phoenix Academy, affecting 33 positions.

The school board made no decisions on the proposed reductions Tuesday. Nor did it discuss a possible tax increase in next year's budget.

Even with the cuts, the district would have to increase taxes by nearly 5 percent to balance the budget. Without a tax increase, the board would have to approve about $2.5 million in additional cuts, which could mean the elimination of another 25 positions.

The budget is scheduled to come up for review again at the board's May 4 finance committee meeting.

So my job and others are still in limbo...

SDoL proposes to cut all Librarians...

If the students cannot receive direct instruction (from a librarian), the library becomes quite simply a beautiful room with a bunch of books in it.

Students who have certified school librarians do better on reading tests.

Got all nostalgia tonight... Looked at old family pictures. Cleaned out a lot of pictures of my external drive.

Watched a movie and bawled my eyes out. One, because it was a good movie and two, a line in the movie reminded me of my Pappy and how much I miss him!

Then the pup and I just kinda chilled out in the clean house with just candlelight and our thoughts.

God I love that dog. Why can't humans love unconditionally and be as loyal as dogs?

EAT THIS, NOT THAT!

These books show people a quick 1st step in making a healthy change in their lives. Just by reading a page out of this book you can apply to your life and make an instant change.

Struggling with my weight my whole life, (and still working on it) I love helping people learn about healthy choices.  I know how hard it is day after day.  I know the struggle of getting back on the horse once you've fallen off.  I know the insecurities people feel.  When I talk to people I say the things that people don't usually talk about.  I make it ok to talk about those things and that is the first step.

With the Junior League I am involved with a program called Kids in the Kitchen. It teaches students healthy food choices. The program allows children to make 3 healthy recipes and allows them to try different vegetables. For some it is a first!

Tomorrow I am presenting at our school's Parent Cafe. I will talk about healthy choices these parents can make right away when they get home!

I ran a Biggest Loser program at a school where I used to teach. Yes, it was a competition, but in the end so many teachers were grateful for all the information they learned. They had made permanent healthy changes in their lives and their familys' lives. And I am proud that I had a hand in that change!
