Is there anything better than trick or treating actually ON Halloween! What a fun time we had! Things that are important in life - family and the traditions we share with them! Both give us a sense of value, belonging, and warm fuzzies! And neither should be taken for granted or underestimated.
Trick or treating tonight reminded me of going to the same neighborhood every year with the same group of friends. Our parents would be dressed up walking around with us! I remember the year it was a HUGE deal when we were allowed to go by ourselves! I remember my friend's father dressing like a gorilla and coming full speed at us from the backyard! We were SOOOOOO scared!
Past costumes included:
Clown
Rainbow Brite
A California Grape
Cookie Monster
Oscar the Grouch
Football player
Cheerleader
Madonna
A pumpkin
etc...
*Please note all costumes were made by my parents and/or grandparents! Where is the creativity these days?!?!?
About Project 365
I have decided to get back into my photography. I have boycotted my hobby for awhile because I miss the meditating atmosphere of a dark room. (Maybe I just miss the fumes!?!?) When I went to school I can remember spending very long evenings in the dark room and having a sense of accomplishment and creativity! Since I have made the switch to digital photography, I rarely edit the photos I take. With this project I will have different types of photos. All photos will be taken with my iPhone and will not be edited. Some will be normal everyday pics and some artistic in nature, but all will be a little part of my day. Everyday for a year! Here's to going out and finding the creativity again...

Day 122
Isn't there something about not pissing off a black cat, especially around Halloween time?
Tell that to the 2 dogs that came to visit poor Oscar's house this weekend! He has NOT been a happy camper for the past 2 days!

Day 121
Juno made a friend tonight! Little Miss Maggie Jaye!
Maggie is a 6 month old English Springer Spaniel.
Juno and Maggie had so much fun wrestling, playing, and ganging up on Oscar!
Instant friends!

Day 120
Hmmmm... Juno is feeling VERY betrayed.
She thought the 6 yr old was her friend but the 6 yr old dressed her up in this silly outfit! Oh did we have a laugh!
Juno's nickname is sometimes Junebug... how fitting!
We are ready for Halloween!

Day 119
WHAT A DAY!!!
I swear I will write a book someday...
This morning, I woke up and my left eye would barely open. I put some warm water on it and it felt a little better. I was even able to put my contact in. As I was driving my eye became more and more irritated, to the point where I even had to pull over! It was burning and itching and watering and it was VERY sensitive to light! I made it home and I immediately took out my contact. I started to get ready for work and my eye felt better again. I really need my contacts to drive and I didn't have my glasses since Juno decided to eat them as a snack one day... So, I put my contact back in. Everything was fine for about 5 mins or so. My eye started to water and burn again. I made it to work but decided to have the clinic doctor take a look. She suggested I go see my eye doctor immediately.
Really? Immediately? I don't have time to just skip to the doctor in the middle of the day!!! However, by noon my left eye was pretty much shut. I called the doctor and went. I guess this was a sign... I got to the doctor's and during my exam he says, "Which eye is it?" I was like uh, hello, the one that I can't open!!! He said, "Well it's actually both eyes that are infected!" What!?!?!? Apparently, both eyes have spots on the corneas or retinas or something. It's a big deal but not a huge deal as in it causing blindness. I have some kind of infection in both eyes that can be caused in various ways...
RESULT - No contacts for 1-2 months!!!!! No big deal except that I don't have any glasses!!!!!
So off I go, trying to drive without contacts and dilated eyes... I get back to school because I needed to get the after school program going. On my way I called the 1 hour glasses place and they said I had to have my glasses ordered by 6pm. Well problem is I had to teach from 4:30-5:30pm. So I ran to the mall during the 1st hour of program picked out my glasses and quickly got back to teach.
Now, I haven't had contacts in for at least 3 hours and I'm getting a migraine from straining my eyes trying to see! I get to school and can barely teach. I'm having the kids read everything for me because things were THAT blurry...
I get back to the mall, pick up my glasses, and get home around 8pm. Needless to say I went straight to bed... (Hence the late posting...)

Day 117
Ahhhh the activity bus...
Come on, who knows what I'm talking about? I drove past my old high school this evening and saw a bus pull out. It reminded me of the days when I would have to go to school all day, go to field hockey practice, then ride the activity bus home. The activity bus sucked! It was for the whole district so even though I lived only about 5mins from school I was always the last to be dropped off! The bus went to the farthest stops first and then came back around. I remember trying to do homework on the way. Most of the time, especially when it was dark, I would have to do everything in power not to fall asleep!
Some nights if I was lucky, I would call my mom collect from the pay phone at the top of the stairs as you walked into the building by the gyms. When they asked to say your name, my brothers or I would quickly say, "Mom pick us up!" It was a great way to call home to let mom she needed to come get us! Unfortunately most nights ended up on...

Day 116
Went to pick up David's parents in Baltimore after their cruise and had a yummy lunch at a place called Cafe Hon. It is like a retro 50's diner. The food was good! The company was good, but we weren't alone! These flamingos were all over and each one was in costume! This was above our table and might have been my favorite. There was another one in the corner and it was dressed like Harry Potter!
SUCH A CUTE PLACE!!!

Day 115
Opening Night at the READING ROYALS!
We all went to the opening night of the Reading Royals tonight! What fun!!!! Thanks to Jen and Ava for coming along and being introduced to how much fun a hockey game can be! Except for Slapshot that is... Ava was NOT having fun at that moment!
At the game, Jen and I were getting updates on the Phillies playoff game. I was also getting updates on the Penguins game and occasionally looking at the Flyers score as well! It was a night for sports!!!!!
Sad news though... Royals = Lost, Phillies = Lost, Penguins = Lost...

Day 113
Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) is a Junior League sponsored event.
This kiddo was trying to convince himself to eat the broccoli. He has never tasted the broccoli and was actually getting sick over the thought. However, he ate it and actually reached in the bowl to get another piece that was much bigger!
The goal of the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and its member Leagues, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.
Inspired by the Junior League of Calgary's Junior Chefs program, the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative began in 2006 with the goal of engaging kids in the preparation of healthy meals as a means to educate them and their parents regarding nutrition and healthy choices. Junior Leagues in more than 200 locations provide lessons and demonstrations related to preparation of healthy meals and snacks in partnership with local community organizations, chefs and nutritionists. The Association of Junior Leagues International provides guidelines and materials to support the success of these educational and motivational activities and supports the program with a website, www.kidsinthekitchen.org. The website includes bilingual recipes, tips on nutrition, fitness and healthy lifestyles as well as an interactive “Kids' Corner” with an online nutrition game provided by Kids in the Kitchen international sponsor, Cartoon Network.

Day 112
Today at school my walkie goes off, "Miss Funk, a teacher needs to see you in the upstairs girls bathroom." This is never good but off I went anyway.
I was expecting paper towels everywhere or a flooded toilet or even a fight! However, I was shown this lovely Picasso.
It's never easy finding out who does stuff like this but someone always wants that person to be found and quickly...
I went to my office and put my detective skills to work. I thought of a plan. I'm gonna use the old, "I know who did this. You know who did this. So if you do not come forward and tell me what you know, you WILL also be in trouble!"
Let's see what happens...

Day 110
Ok, so I DID NOT take this picture.
Today I felt like this kid all day long! I'm pretty sure at some point I looked like this kid too!
To top off my Horrible no good very bad day, I was driving home at 8:30pm and got a flat tire and was stranded waiting for AAA. The poor lady on the phone when I called AAA got the brunt of my feelings... First I was angry then I started to sob uncontrollably.
I didn't have a second to myself, needless to say I didn't have a sec to take a picture either.

Day 109
The Gift Of Friends
by Karin Schaefer
There are days when
bubbling from us comes
the innocent child within,
who giggles at the little things
and wears a silly grin.
There are days when
melancholy comes to
visit for a while;
the mind feels tired, the body weak;
we have no strength to smile.
There are days when
joy abundant
grabs a hold of you and me;
wraps us up in all it's splendor,
lifts us up and sets us free.
There are days when
sorrow wraps us
in its cloak of grief and fear,
'till our hearts ache to the breaking,
'till our eyes can't shed a tear.
There are days when
love bestows us
with its wonderment and light;
with its beauty and its mystery,
its power and its might.
And there are days when
life rewards us
and seems to make amends
by granting us a marvelous gift,
the precious gift of Friends.

Day 108
Wow did we have fun today! What a great place for kids AND adults! There were so many things to do for kids! My 6-yr-old Blondie friend made me go down this slide. I was so nervous but LOVED it once we went down! Then we did the flashlight tag corn maze! My only complaint was that it was cold, but I'm always cold so...
Loved it!

Day 107
How true... How many situations can you think of in your life or in someone else's life where if love was not present the situation would be completely different?
When love is involved we tend to accept more, respect more, learn move, grow more, are more flexible, are more caring, are more willing to do things we normally wouldn't do, etc.
Love makes all the difference :0)

Day 106
Currently, these are my favorite sleeping aides. My mind spins a mile a minute and when I wake up at 3am with a burning email or a question about something or another thing to remember to do the next day, I can't fall back asleep if I don't do something about whatever I was thinking.
It is so hard to unwind from my day, from my thoughts, because I'm not only reviewing the day in my head but I am planning for the next day.
Tonight, I am anxious about tomorrow. I call this my doctor day. I have 3 doctors appts tomorrow one of which is to provide me with a "pick me up" iron injection. I always fear going to the doctor because no matter why I'm going, I leave with 10 million other reasons why I need a follow-up in the immediate future...
Ugg this is gonna be a long night. I think I'll have a glass of each!

Day 105
People do their best with what they have...
I took dinner over to a student's house tonight. It was a reward for good behavior by the students. I was reluctant to go because I had a million other things on my plate that night but I decided that this was important and needed to be done.
I had spoken with the boys' mother last week and set it up that I would bring pizza over tonight. Not only were the boys excited but their mom was excited too. She called me early in the day asking what time I would be over. She was relieved by my later than sooner answer. She said that gave her enough time to clean.
Little did I know that not only did she clean the house top to bottom but that she arranged for her uncle to take her to the store. When I got to their house she had baked potatoes, a huge chef salad, and battered fish in addition to the pizzas!
Dinner was nice. I actually had a great time. It was good to see the kids interact with their younger siblings and the adults in the house. The older kids helped the younger kids, oldest boy was VERY caring with his grandmother, we prayed before we ate, and everyone had a good time.
This is a good mom that I believe really wants the best for her kids. I know she loves those kids more than words can express. I think she feels the decisions she makes is what is best however I pray that one day she is healed with all her own issues so that she can be consistent in her parenting.
I can make no judgements on how to parent when she has six kids and is the same age as me. They may not have a lot of money. They may not have a big house. But...
They do the best with what they have...

Day 104
Keep Out
I'm noticing more and more in my personal and professional life how guarded and untrusting some people really are.
I've always worn my heart on my sleeve. I've trusted too fast, loved to quickly and usually get burnt in the end for it.
However, I refuse to live my life guarded. I refuse to be cynical. I refuse to be negative.
I will continue to look for the good in people... always.

Day 102
Hmmmm... Talking with a friend tonight and we came up with this analogy. Women is this not true!?!?!?
New Shoes vs. New Relationships
Found a pair of shoes.
Found a new guy.
50% off already reduced price!
Too good to be true?
Can't wait to find just the right outfit to wear with the shoes!
Can't wait for that right moment with my guy!
Wore the new shoes with socks too thick just because I HAD to wear them that night, couldn't wait!
Got close REAL fast.
Feet hurt real bad, took off socks, put shoes back on.
Heart hurt, made excuses, got back in the saddle.
Stubborn...
Back of heels got rubbed raw, got hurt even more.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
Set shoes aside for a while and took care of feet.
Focused on self.
Feet healed.
Heart healed, (properly).
Remembered why I loved those shoes in the first place.
Prepared myself for another go.
Wore thinner socks... broke them in gently and after a few more wears...
leather and feet molded together for a perfect fit. :0)

Day 101
A Lion's Playground...
It's always nice to see someone in their element. The confidence, the spirit, the love of the game is 10 ten feet in front of them!
Can't wait to keep watching!
Just gotta stay bundled up! By the end of the game I was literally shivering and you could hear my teeth chattering...

Day 100
Wooo hoooo! Day 100! I really didn't think I'd make it this long!
I love decorating for Fall!
September breaks out the mums and the fall colors.
October keeps the fall colors and mums and adds pumpkins and gourds but really gets into the Halloween decorating which is always fun!
November keeps the fall colors and mums and adds the apple cider and the yummy smelling Yankee Candles like Apple Pie, Butter Rum, etc. You also get into Thanksgiving decorating too!
THEN AND ONLY THEN... are Christmas lights/decorations appropriate! Black Friday and after... And that's a whole other decorating fiasco THAT I LOVE!!!!!

Dogs really are Man's Best Friend!

Day 98
What is it about rainbows?
Today as I was getting ready to leave school, another teacher came in raving about the rainbow. My principal and I went over to the window and sure enough the ooohhhs and the aaahhhs started! Not one, but TWO rainbows!
I ran outside to take a picture. The school parking lot was full of people from the neighborhood taking pictures. Kids were running around screaming in a giddy way because they were sooooo excited.
I got in my car and checked Facebook and immediately there were pictures posted by SO many people!
I felt like several people in my life at that very moment, no matter how they were feeling seconds before, were happy.
That's a nice thought!

Day 97
Can't we all just get along?
My jersey's came today and I couldn't be happier! In a world where everyday I strive to maintain peace within my environment, I have to go and upset Mother Nature by ordering a PHILADELPHIA Eagles jersey and a PITTSBURGH Penguins jersey.
What have I done?
Change is good.
Keeping an open mind is good.

Day 95
Imagination...
In the land of instant gratification, video games, television, etc... I feel like kids have lost the ability to imagine things and create. Not all kids...
This weekend I was at a cookout with about 10 kids under the age of 9. They all played nicely together on the swing set and set up these elaborate make-believe scenarios in this imaginary world. Nothing seemed odd or out of place.
Except for the fact that most of children where I work don't have the ability to create these make-believe worlds.
I was at my school this weekend I went down on the playground with the kids that chose to come play. The kids were hitting one another, play fighting, and mostly kinda just sitting around on the equipment. A very different scenario than the previous evening at my cookout.
Why such a difference? Lack of background knowledge? Lack of vocabulary skills? Have my kids never learned how to really play or is it that reality is enough to deal with and the imaginary make-believe seems like a waste of time...
In the land of instant gratification, video games, television, etc... I feel like kids have lost the ability to imagine things and create. Not all kids...

Day 94
Friends...
The thing about true friends... I mean real, honest to goodness friends that would take a bullet for you... is that even though we've changed and we're all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we'll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we're not all still friends.
“A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.”
“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.”
