Day 242
This has been a crazy week at school...
It seems like every classroom is moving!
Some people are in the process of moving all week long. Then there are some of us that packed up Fri, where moved Sat, and have kids tomorrow! Computers, Smart boards, telephones... all down for some of us until Friday! CRAZY!
But we go on... and we do it because the kids deserve a school comparable to their suburban peers. It may not be perfect but it is WAY better than what we had!
It's a process. We just need to keep telling ourselves... It's a process!

Day 241
I put this magnet on my car about 2 weeks ago...
Today was such a beautiful day! The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, people were driving with their windows down and music blaring, etc.
I was one of those people with the windows down singing at the top of my lungs! At a stop light, the person on my right rolled their window down and yelled over to me...
"Love your magnet! Great message! Made me smile!"
I do what I can... :0)

Day 240
I needed lunch with my students today! At the end of the month I get to take 6 lucky kids that have been role models in one way or another to lunch! It's always a good time and nice break in the day!

Bought a ramp for Juno for the car = $40
Took Juno to the dog park to RUN = ~$0.15/day
Having Juno sleep the entire rest of the day while I got laundry and cleaning done = PRICELESS!!!

The battle between the oatmeal!
Game on...
McDonald's:
Price: $1.99
Consists of: oatmeal, dried fruit, fresh apple chunks
Taste: Yummy! A little mushy but still, surprisingly good!
Calories: 290
Starbucks:
Price: $2.45
Consists of: oatmeal, brown sugar (optional), dried fruits (optional), nuts (optional)
Taste: I put everything in except the nuts... It needed more liquid once I got it to school but other than that, very good!
Calories: 140 (plain), +50 for brown sugar, +100 for dried fruits, +100 for nuts. So if you mix in everything = 390
In my opinion, either is good. It's a difference of $0.50. I may lean toward Starbucks because of my slight addiction to their coffee and because I've boycotted McDonald's for so long... However maybe the oatmeal will lure me back.

Day 232
MATH NIGHT!
Math night at our school tonight was a SUCCESS! It was the biggest turnout of participation for a school event since I've been there! We had stations for students and parents to go that involved games and activities, We had door prizes, an estimation contest, and even popcorn!!! Everyone had a great time! It was a great sense of community!

Day 231
In 2001, the Oxford English Dictionary added the term Girl power, defining this phrase as:
"Power exercised by girls; spec. a self-reliant attitude among girls and young women manifested in ambition, assertiveness, and individualism."
In our after school program, 9 girls completed a character education class which involved writing and receiving letters to/from Millersville University's Women's Basketball Team. Tonight I was able to go along with the girls to meet the team and watch the game. The girls had a blast! It is always nice to see people go that extra mile to help kids!

Day 230
Today was a good day! I started off my day at my Dean's meeting. We had a presenter talk to us about brain research and what happens when children get upset. Especially related to teaching children poverty. Children whose family meet the guidelines of poverty are actually "wired" differently. Many people do not know how vast the difference in vocabulary and experiences between children in poverty and middle class children. Their brains actually develop differently. It was VERY interesting and put a perspective again on the type of children I deal with everyday. By know means is this an excuse for their academics, behavior etc, but it reminds us that we need to go about teaching and handling these children in different ways.
The magnets in the picture are from a first grader who has autism. He has OCD tendencies with magnets. It comforts him to walk around my room and collect all the magnets and put them on the side of his desk. He can't sit down until that happens. He's a really neat kid, one of my favorites actually... :0)

Happy Valentine's Day!
Driving to school this morning, I saw a Royer's Flower van in front of me. Oddly enough, I had the urge to rear end the van! (no, not really!)
Then I get a text... and it reminds me of the special people in my life. Funny how a short message could make my day!
After a long day at work, I wanted to put a smile on his face. So I got creative and made him work a little for it!

Lazy Saturday afternoon on the couch with my snuggle buddy!

A humble hug can make you whole,
As if your heart had wings.
Warm-bloodied creatures love the most,
Like lions, tigers, bears...
Yet penguins cuddle coast-to-coast,
All snuggled up in pairs...
Three penguins snuggled up with love,
Contentment in their eyes.
The little one to stare above
At parents, oh, so wise...
To think that this was all they knew,
For nought on Earth they owned...
Yet love itself would see them through,
While life to them was loaned.
Life is a gift, a time to learn,
A sharing, nothing more...
A gift that none of us can earn,
So cherish what life's for...
Three penguins snuggled closer still,
Against the bitter cold...
Yet in each heart was love's warm thrill
More priceless than pure gold...

Homemade Guacamole!
First time making it!!! So easy! Thanks to a few conversations at school along with a taste testing, I stopped by the grocery store on the way home tonight!
When I need to clear my head, destress, relax, etc... I cook!

Day 221
Today I walked in my door at 3:30am.
Went to bed only to wake up at 7:30am to get ready to leave for the Pens game in DC. A game which I DO NOT want to talk about!!!!
Got home around 6pm and went to my dad's to watch the Packers win the Super Bowl.
Am writing this at 10:40pm and I am soooooo ready for bed!
Not only was today a loooooooong day but I did it all with a VERY sore neck! Apparently I need to stretch before playing darts... My neck was so sore today! I was in a heated battle trying to defend my honor... number 15 was my nemesis!!!! It was well worth it and had a blast!

Day 218
GOALIE FIGHT!!!
Hasn't happened in 4 yrs and this was my first! I LOVED IT! Although it only lasted about a minute, it was wonderful to see Brent Johnson take out DePietro in one punch!
MAF and Beej = best goalie duo in the NHL!
*disclaimer - I wish I was there in person but I wasn't so naturally this pic isn't mine...

Everything looks pretty after it snows. But I am especially in awe after an ice storm! The trees are gorgeous!

Day 216
Another snow day... Or should I say ice day?
I'm not one to be cooped up in the house all day long! So I called my salon (it's in Reading) to see if there were any openings due to people canceling. JACKPOT! I even had times to choose from! So I left about an hour before the appt. The roads were fine and this was at 10am. I was crusin' along with no trouble until about a mile before the Mohton exit on 222. Berks county was awful!!! It hadn't started to rain yet and the roads were slushy and icy still! Traffic was going about 25 miles per hour...
All in all, I was impressed with my car! I've never been one to be scared to drive in bad weather. The best part was when I got to the salon there was another Element in the parking lot along with a Pilot.
